Shipwrecks of Homebush Bay

Until the 1980’s, Homebush Bay was used as a staging post for old ships, whose usable metal was stripped off then the remaining hulks were taken off the coast near Narrabeen and scuttled for a reef. When the ship breaking yard closed, the wrecks were left behind. The wrecks have historical significance, with connections to World War II. They are now home to some of the species of water bird that frequent the area, providing valuable nesting and breeding space.
